  1. Day 7 was another 'writing' type challenge and was to create a post that linked to another blog/site.

    • Do you normally write 'link posts?' (why/why not)
    • What did you post (share a URL)?
    • How did readers respond?
    • Will you use some of the techniques outlined in the teaching in future?

  2. No I have never linked to another blog in my posts. Is this a good idea? Wouldn't this just leak some of my own PR to another site. Darren whats the benefit of doing this? I cross link between my own posts (internal linking) but never thought of linking externally.

  3. I write a link post every sunday: "Design links for the week", where I put a list of the best links I collected on my Tumblelog. I post those on sunday because I think that most people are not in a professional context, so they might enjoy some more entertaining post. The readers seem to enjoy those, as well as the bloggers that are linked to.

  4. I almost always write "link posts" because that's what Bard of Valiant is about - finding content gamers can use, then showing them how to use it. I make sure to always share my sources, my readers are smart enough to know where the ideas came from anyhow.

My most recent was the same as my list post: http://www.bardofvaliant.com/2009/04/conspiracy-theory-fantasy-games/

I don't speed link anymore, instead I pick things and build on them, which is more popular. Small bites seem to work better than large meals for blog readers.

  5. I usually write link posts, but I try to link to news sources rather than other blogs. So far it hasn't worked out so well, so I'm changing the strategy.

The latest link post is called Surviving Assessment Centres and it ties into a very comprehensive post on career.

I've done speed linking earlier, but it did not seem to have the desired effect. It works for me to write up a more comprehensive post.

  8. My day 7 post was linking to another blogger, and taking an opposing view, to a degree.

It's part of a series I do, called Food Blog Monday, where I profile another blogger.

This one is all about Bloody Marys and Bloody Caesars. Yum!

  9. I do a weekly link post with three other blogger called Weight Loss Weekly. We take turns suggesting questions related to weight loss and healthy living and all share our persepectives. I've found it really has helped increrase my traffic, and it's great connecting with like minded people and share our stories. Check it out at Weight Loss Weekly. The best bit was the opportunity came to me. I replaced one of the bloggers who used to do this when her work load got too great. I was active in the comments, and that's what got me noticed I guess.

I think link posts are great for two reasons one of course is the exposure you create for yourself and other bloggers, but mostly it's about interaction. That's what makes reading and working on blogs so rewarding, connecting and engaging with your little community.

  13. I always try to link out because I find it lends more credibility to my arguments. What I like the most about blogging is that, unlike traditional journalism, you can present many sides to an issue by linking out.

I recently linked to three other bloggers who successfully put some pressure on toymaker Mattel regarding its tweening of the much-loved Dora the Explorer.

  14. Agreeing with Shane on "The Mother of All Lists".  This was a genius idea.  I retweeted and it was well deserved.   This post has over 62 comments.  Cool. I had done one or two posts prior to this assignment where I linked to other blogs.  I like it.  I plan to continue doing so in the future. Here's the post I did for the Challenge. Good Vibrations, Live, Laugh, Love. Here's a previous post where I linked to another blogger.  Law of Attraction and the Economy.

  15. This is the first time we have ever written a link post. It normally takes us a long time to write a post. But link posts are much faster as the base research is effectively already done for you. Also if you choose the topic related to your brand it seems much easier to weave in the concepts from your existing articles. We will be definately doing more of these.

We noticed some bloggers turn off comments if their blog post ranks high for a search term. This is a great way to comment on their article regardless if you have stomething useful to add to the conversation.  It's still a win win situation for you and the original poster.

  16. I link a lot in my posts, but needing to do it for an assignment made me freeze up. Nothing was exciting enough, special enough...Finally, I just gave up and wrote something! http://mamaonthego.com/2009/04/16/how-to-find-free-high-speed-internet-access/

  17. Most of my posts include links to fashion designers and/or online clothing retailers and occasionally other fashion blogs; crediting any pictures we use, allowing visitors to see more, or purchase items if they like them.

  18. I did my Day 7 the other day. Again I'm starting late and not necessarily catching up in order but nonetheless I'm trying to get the days done. Here is my first post linking to other blogs. It's now something I'm starting to do on all posts going forward.

  19. I caused a huge firestorm on my blog with my link post!

Actually after the assignment to study top blogs in my niche (homeschooling) I determined that I needed to take a position, either political or religious or -- in some way position myself. I realized that the top blogs all had an axe to grind, and that just posting neat lesson ideas or funny anecdotes about my kids was not going to cut it. So, I used the "link post" idea to link to a blog I disagree with, and I ended up getting more traffic, more comments, than I've ever had in a day before:

The post is called Little Girls in Short Skirts.

I followed it up today with a post about the tea party -- we'll see how that goes!

Little Blue School: This is how homeschoolers really are.

  20. Question for everyone. Is it better to make links bold in your posts?

    Posted 1 year ago #
  21. @Lisa & Shane Hudson: Thanks for the compliment on my post "The Mother of All Lists." It took me forever to create the post, however, it was quite a reward receiving emails from everyone. A lot of people also received a significant traffic bump to their own blogs by just being on the list--that was rewarding as well! I hope to write a follow-up post that covers all the benefits from that one post.

  22. I write link posts every Friday as a part of my Fetching Friday series.  Basically, I do a mashup of resources of articles I find over the week, some off popular sites and others that are sent to me through Stumbleupon and other social sites.  I also do Twitter #FollowFriday recommendations of users that I interact with and gain useful information from.

I find that readers have definitely responded to these articles in a positive way - especially the bloggers whose articles are included in the mashup, and Twitter users that are recommended.

  23. I started writing link posts every 1-2 weeks a few months ago.  The main reason I did it was that everyone has taken to Twitter for sharing interesting links but that passes no link juice to the site you're linking to, so in order to still give that bit of juice to the most valuable links I come across I include them in a link post.

Here is a recent link post for example:

  24. I posted my link post this morning.  It's an interview with 5 food bloggers.  I'm amazed at the results!  It's got 12 comments so far, which is pretty good - about average for my more popular posts.  But what is really amazing is the traffic I've gotten so far today and it's only 1/2 way through the day.  I've had 661 page views today and 371 unique visitors.  That is the most page loads I've ever had in a single day. Two of the bloggers I interviewed linked back to me on their blogs, telling about the interview.  One of them runs the blog "A Year of Crockpotting".  It's a very popular blog and she has launched another site to promote a new book.  She is one that linked back to me.  I wasn't sure she would want to do the interview, since she's further along on this blogging journey than I am.  Her crockpot blog is just at blogspot though, and I knew she has a book coming out to promote.  We've also had contact before.  I've left comments on her blog and she commented on mine, so we had some kind of prior contact. I'm thrilled with the results of the link post.  I've learned so much from this 31 day challenge!

  25. I often write link posts actually, mainly due to the fact that the premise of my whole blog is that it's a social commentary, commenting on and expanding upon news and other things. I often look to other bloggers for cool things to build upon and put my own thoughts out there on.

I wrote my link post last week but I've been slack at reporting back here! (Uni's been a bit hectic lately!). I wrote it after reading a humourous post on Seth Godin's blog about display pics and wanted to share it!

You can check it out here!

  26. I often link to posts, but tend to link to download sites. I found this kinda hard tonight as I'm not spending enought time reading other blogs in my niche and I realise this is a big mistake. I've got a lot of time on my hands, even at work, so I need to use that time better.

I linked to 3 blog posts about Linux, called 3 Great Links for Linux Newbies.

  27. I have written quite  few link posts on my blog as I like to share with my readers the useful and exciting information I come across on the web. I usually find my readers respond very positively as they've found a useful resource or just something nice to read/watch/listen through this post of mine. I also tend to email thelink of the post to the person/website/blog owner who I write about and almost all of them get back with appriciative comments :). Here a recent example.

Yes i do link posts, it helps interact with other bloggers and give my readers more relevant content. I posted a complementary review on a new Bluetooth 3.0 technology posted on InDrops blog. I linked the post as well as the blogger review, and added some information he didn't posted.

I spect readers to visit the InDrops blog e check out another reviews on the subject. So far, no comments :-(

I think i will keep doing it. I am thinking about my turism blog, made in english, and to use all of this techniques i am learning here. If it works now, on a misc content blog, will work with a niched one.

  29. I am in catch up mode on this, as started a couple of weeks late. One observation is that some of the examples people have posted here seem to me to be less "link posts" than "posts with hyperlinks in them".

The point of a link post is to take another blog post and write something related to that.

There are some examples here where people have included (sometimes several) hyperlinks but not referred to them. In one example (DailyHarold) the links serve to interrupt the flow of what Harold is writing and so risk leading people away rather than building authority. As 2 of the links are repeated and just go to Wikipedia rather than another blog, they act more like those double underiined hyperinks (not sure what they are called). I am not wanting to be critical here but constructive -  Harold has suggested he is going to use this approach going forward in all his posts - it would be worth him reading the original lesson again to really understand what a link post means. Otherwise he may risk driving people away rather than drawing them in.

I used to avoid link posts for the usual fears of driving people to other blogs, but have found some great results with them, when used judiciously. I think they can build authority, be generous in sharing useful information with readers and of course draw in more traffic.
