  1. I've got alterts set up related to "Marilyn Roxie" and I've recently switched over to Google Reader instead of using merely the Blogger dashboard- boy, I did not realize what I was missing! I'm following like...over 1,000 blogs apparently, ha. Excellent for watching all the trends in music and all.

  2. 5 days after setting up my "News" and "Blog" alerts, I got a cool surprise today ... my blog was included in the "Blog" alert - and it was at the top of the list! LOL

I use Google Alerts and have had good results with them. Been using them for over a month now. Heard about them from a press release webinar.

  5. I set up google alerts for news articles relevant for the different topics I write about, engineering, art, fashion and video games. I originally had alerts for blogs as well but I found that to be a bit too much information. It's good to be able to see what major events are going on that are relevant to your area since you generally see several articles about them in a short space of time.

I found it useful for one post already. I searched through the fashion news articles and made a link post pointing to the most interesting ones: 7 Great Fashion News Articles.

  8. I just set up my first alerts. I use Google Alerts and set up three alerts. One for my keyword, one for my brand, one for my name. I am happy to enter this new level of blogging. Thanks Darren!

Still learning Google Alerts' features though, trying to find the best settings.

  9. Really like Google Alerts!  I've got several set up including my own name.  The more I get into social media, the deeper my respect for Google goes up.  They got some cool stuff.  I did set up Technorati watchlist but from what I can tell, I can only enter one list. Don't like that, also it doesn't email you. I have to go check it.  Don't like that.

  11. I did already have alerts set up. I use google, and love having them come once a day. I added a new keyword today and a new vanity one, the name of my blog. Now I have 6 alerts. I started using them to help find similar content blogs. XD

  12. Today, I added Google Alerts with just one keyword, "shopping".

I did use Google Alerts for Cloud Computing, back when I did Cloud Weekly. At that time I over did the search words. It got overwhelming.

I signed up for Google Alerts, this is a marvelous tool for keeping us posted. I tried to use Technorati Watchlist, but there was a message on the site, saying they "made the difficult decision to discontinue supporting watchlists". Did anyone have the same experience or know what happened?

    • Did you already have these types of alerts set up?

Yes, I have had Google Alerts for my name and my sister's company for months. I also recently added alerts for a few celebrities which generate a lot of interest on one of the freelance sites I frequent. I filter those straight to a folder so I only need to look at them if I decide I want to write about them.

I think this is definitely something you have to use in moderation. I am trying to think of keywords specific enough that I don't fill my inbox with noise.

    • What services do you use?

    Google Alerts

    • How many alerts have you set up?

8 or 9 - most of those I don't even read. Need to rethink that.

I would like to add that I am finding that the most popular posts on my blog (they're getting retweeted and listed in digests!) are slightly off-topic and newsy. I set up my blog trying to aim at a narrow niche, but then these two subjects popped up and I thought, well, that's not exactly my focus but if I'm interested, probably other writers are too. So glad I wrote what was on my mind. Sometimes you don't know what you want to say until you have written it down. Don't be surprised if your blog takes you in a direction you hadn't anticipated.

I am also watching another blogger use pop culture references to grow her blog. The Adventures of Bubba is a blog for Quality Logo Products, a company that puts logos on promotional items (pens, hats, etc.) Recently the blog featured a series of articles about what ABC's Castle (US television show) can teach us about marketing. This led to tweets to fans of the show, who went to check out the blog. Of course, not every person who went to the blog will end up being a customer, but still some percentage will and that worked to grow the blog's readership.

I'm not saying you shouldn't have a focus or a niche, nor that you should wander off topic very often, but sometimes following your fancy can get you noticed.

  16. Today your task is to set up 'alerts' for your niche or industry to help you monitor what others are saying on your topic.

    • Did you already have these types of alerts set up?

I just figured out how to manage Twitter hashtags through TweetDeck last week, so I have a column going right now for one.

    • What services do you use?

I decided to use Tweetdeck for Twitter, and I now have Google Alerts set up to send me weekly e-mails.

    • How many alerts have you set up?

I set up about 5 alerts for my blogs, and I'm having them sent weekly.

  17. Did you already have these types of alerts set up?

Yes, I’ve been using alerts for awhile now.  I have found out the by making “phrase” specific I receive that are more inline with my niche.  A broad alert sends too many generic listings.

    What services do you use?

To keep things simple Google for now

How many alerts have you set up?

8 of them including “mental strength” and “warrior mindset

    • Did you already have these types of alerts set up? Yes, a couple of vanity alerts and a few keyword strings. Never kept up with monitoring the keywords b/c they were too broad and highly unmanageable. This exercise is helping me follow through and narrow my focus. ;)
    • What services do you use? Twitter search & Google alerts - all sent to my Google Reader.
    • How many alerts have you set up? Using 3 right now and testing out 10 more. Next week I'll analyze and revise.

  18. Did you already have these types of alerts set up?

I used Google Alerts to monitor my own name (which is unfortunately pretty common) so I'd receive new alerts quite often. With such a common name which is also shared with a professional hockey player and well known skateboarder I just glance through these quickly.

    What services do you use?

I use Google Alerts and Tweetdeck.

How many alerts have you set up?

I have 3 Google Alerts setup to monitor variations of my name, 3 to monitor my site and URLs, and 3 more for key terms related to my niche. I also use Tweetdeck to monitor re-tweets, mentions and a few hash tags related to my niche.
