Day 18 - Create a Sneeze Page for Your Blog

(84 posts)

  1. Today's task is to develop a 'sneeze page' for your blog.

Sneeze pages are a type of page that I've successfully used on my blogs for years to increase page views, increase site 'stickiness' and highlight my best content.

Once you've read today's post and have created a sneeze page - come back here and share a link to it so we can all learn from what you do.

  2. A sneeze page for a blog with a small archive of just two months, how do you manage that one? As it stands I have "just" 30 posts in my entire blog.

It seems a bit odd to make such a page when you have little content yet. But on the other hand, my older posts arn't getting any views lately. So it's off to create a sneeze page and get those older posts exposed as well. I'll report back with a link later.

  3. I added a "My favorite posts" catagory and also put it in the navigation bar. I hope it helps!

I'm having trouble finding a WP plug-in that will post a link to last year's post at the bottom of every entry. I'm sure one exists but I can't find anything other than a related posts plug-in. Does anyone know of one that just gives a line of text?

  4. I’m not quite sure this is prominent enough on my blog, but it is under my Pages header on the left sidebar and is across the top of my header listed alphabetically. I call it Best of Cardiogirl.

I do need to add more posts from further back. And I suppose, lacking a plug-in to do the work for me, I could create a heading in the left sidebar A Post From the Past and then manually add the link changing it every couple weeks or so.

  5. I too was wondering where to place the sneeze post on the blog.  Is it visible enough to add it to the navigation bar?  That seems to be a logical place for it.

  6. I must admit I'd never before heard about sneeze pages, but I like the idea, and immediately gave it a try.

I created a sneeze page for people who are starting out to use Google Adsense: http://www.icantinternet.org/2009/04/adsense-articles-for-everyone/

I do still need to add it into the navigation somewhere, still trying to find out where it would be the best place for it...

  7. I somewhat have multiple sneeze pages, if you look at my catagories, there's a -Specials- catagory. I plan on continuing on highlighting articles i find get the most hits, as well as content I really go out of my way for.   http://onlivedream.com  what do you think, does this catagory do its magic, or should I make some straight up sneeze pages (keep in mind, my blog is only 3 weeks old)

  8. I've always tried to work with pages and how to make them dynamic instead of static, but the idea of sneeze pages are great, I just have to link to the posts instead of putting the whole post on that page. I will be working today on a couple new pages with this type of content, and I think it will help get readers to see the old posts, as well as giving them a single place to see them.

  10. As part of our editorial calendar challenge, I slotted my Sunday posts to be a week in review. I'm glad I did :) Here's is my post in response to today's challenge.

  11. I need my fellow blogger's help on this one. I'm lost. I dont' have alot of posts yet. I've got maybe 3 or 4 that have had alot of views but not alot of comments overall on ANY of my posts. What's your all's advice on what I should do for a sneeze page?

  12. @dailyharold... I'd hold the sneeze page until you have something else to justify its existence...

    Posted 1 year ago #
  13. @dailyharold: Instead of a sneeze page, build on a previous post. Repeat 3-4 times and ta-da, you have enough material for a sneeze page.

  14. What about just a Top Posts page? Like links to the 5 most read posts? Is that a "squeeze" page? Is there a plugin anyone knows of that could do that for me? Like take the most active posts from the Wordpress.com Stats plugin and adjust the page's content to show the 5 most active ones for you? Or is it something I'd have to do manually?

    @mannerv,

Can you explain what you mean? Maybe I'm missing what a "sneeze" page is then. I gathered it was a list of past posts, etc. Right? Or no?

  15. There is a Popular Posts plugin that keeps track automatically.  Only caveat is that it needs a little time to build up stats; when you first install it, don't activate it for a day or two maybe.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  16. @HazardousPaste

I was going to say the same thing. Popular Posts is great and I use it, but sometimes it misses my favorite (in my opinion, best) posts. So I also have a "best of" widget beneath my Popular Posts. It is a plugin called Must Read posts, and the main difference is you choose the posts yourself rather than WP-Stats.

I also just finished a post series on How To Get Started Eating Healthy and interlinked all the posts. I am finding that people are flipping through 10-20 pages on my blog regularly! My subscriber rate has jumped too. Hooray for sneezes!

  18. Got a bump of subscribers last month, when I offered three of my books for free (e-book version...)to new subscribers.

I decided to write a full post, with links to areas of the blog, as well as my site, that readers needed to know about to understand my perspective.

I put a button to the page in the widgets column, to the right, which shows on all posts on the blog.

Direct link to the "sneeze page" is:

  21. I did this one, and put a tab on the home page to it. Did this after reading Darren's post about sneeze pages some time back. But it works, gets lots of traffic and is quite sticky.

  24. I did what a few others are doing, and made my sneeze page into the navigation on the left side of the page, titling it "favorite posts."  http://amykb.blogspot.com/

  25. I don't have many posts (5!) to be able to create a decent sneeze page. I try instead to create kind of a Table of contents to incorporate not-yet-written articles with posted ones. Here is the page : http://cioassistant.wordpress.com/cio-mind-map/. Your comments are appreciated.

  26. Here's my practice one (http://opinionatedant.com/extras/word/).  I debated if I should just link to the catergories, but decided to do both for now.  Then I added a little box in the top left sidebar over catergories "In Case You Missed It" which I'll add more sneeze pages to later!

There are a lot of great ideas on here, keep 'em coming.

  27. I decided a few weeks ago that even I was having trouble finding all the hidden jewels of information in Our Hiking Blog.

I then created a page that lists all of our posts grouped into logical areas, for example

    - Trip Reports - then listed the posts related to each trip

    - Hiking Gear - all the posts about different gear

    - Food - you get the idea!

I ended up with a huge list, and it has been successful.  Creates a good spot on  Our Hiking Blog where all the posts can be easily viewed.

I think this is particularly relevant for a blog like ours where there is a lot of infomation about "How to" do things, or "What is it like?  This is the link to  Find all the posts on Our Hiking Blog

I would be interested in feedback about the list, headings and navigation to the page from the main blog page if anyone is interested to take the time :-)  -(I can already see stuff I need to improve)

  28. rather than a page, i have created a typepad list that displays in my sidebar.  this is quicker for me to update and lets me display it throughout the entire blog.  my list is simply titled "most popular tutorials" because that is what draws the most readers to my blog.

  29. Still not sure how to do this sneeze page either. I have 27 posts so far, and I started interlinking them recently. Since I am still developing exactly what people want out of my blog, I am not sure how I can do this sneeze page. I know my encaustic monoprint tutorial got a lot (for me) of action, but I haven't had time yet to make another one to link to it! What to do?!

  30. When we finished remodeling our 36 square foot kitchen in Berlin, Germany, I created a sneeze page for it.

    http://www.makingthishome.com/our-kitchen/

That page has been a huge asset on my blog, and I've been brainstorming more pages that I could build.  Thanks for bringing it front and center in my mind, Darren.
